tl;dr version: Operation Highjump was an expedition by the USA to find Nazi bases around Antarctica, consisting of a large amount of naval ships and men, and more than enough supplies to set up a Little America on Antarctica. Admiral Byrd, the leader of the expidition, went out with some other planes off of an aircraft carrier with magnometers(to search for hollow points in the land), spy cameras, and other equipment, returned 3 hours late from his expedition, supposedly losing an engine and having to throw most of his equipment overboard, except for film and magnometer readings.
